A Poem for the Ages – Or Not

Praise the Lord and Hallelujah,

The GOP’s gonna stick it to ya.

They’ve been waiting in the wings,

With a program that really stings.

The middle class’s safety net,

Torn to shreds with no regret.

No one fighting, no one caring,

No! The wealth is not for sharing.

Rich folks now are celebrating

No more sulking, no more waiting

Their fat yacht has left the dock.

Left behind are those they mock.

Praise the Lord and Hallelujah,

The GOP’s gonna stick it too ya.

Well, whadja expect, Shakespeare.

Taxpayers To Finance Big Pharma Drugs

Once again liberal Democrats have cozied up to Big Pharma along with the usual coven of Republicans.

This time it’s Kay Hagan (D-NC) and John Kerry (D-MA) who in a letter to the FDA have proposed extending the patent protection of drugs developed from biological substances to an already prolonged period of 12 years. The protections would cover all data including safety information and deny access to generic producers and other drug companies who may be developing similar drugs.

Forming a government agency to develop new drugs has become absolutely essential since Big Pharma long ago refocused its efforts from research to marketing and selling prescription medicines in TV commercials.

The failure of Big Pharma to develop new drugs is just another example of how government welfare to corporations warps the competitive marketplace.

By giving drug companies a prolonged period of patent protection, a company’s executives can focus on short term profits and huge bonuses and ignore the long term public benefit as well as the interests of the company itself.

Financing for the new Federal research center should breeze through Congress once loopholes in legislation permit the pharmaceutical industry to reap a profit bonanza from taxpayer largesse.

Industry fussing should end when middle class taxes begin to gush in Wall Street’s direction. Sounds like a sweet deal for the Streeters: no investment in research; just marketing, profits and bonuses.

Oh, and by the way, negotiating drug prices with Big Pharma will be strictly prohibited.

The Mendacity of Hope*

Would you vote for a president who did any of these things:

Broke a campaign pledge to support a public option.

Signed HRC legislation that was so weak that it left health insurance badly in need of reform

Endorsed the dismantling of New Deal financial regulation.

Signed legislation that left Wall Street practices badly in need of reform, reinforced banks that were too big to fail and are now stronger than ever.

Supported two illegal wars started by a previous president who lied to the nation about the need for war and then intensified the actions in one of those wars.

Continued to incarcerate prisoners without legal representation or trial by jury, to spy on Americans, endorse political assassinations and refuse to close Guantanamo.

Vowed to support Net Neutrality and then reneged on his promise.

Established a Cat Food Commission and then rigged it to ensure recommendations to cut Social Security.

Signed off on two wholly inadequate stimulus plans that were weighted heavily toward tax cuts.

Extended tax cuts for the wealthy further endangering the economic security of the nation.

Permitted his Justice Department to approve one of the biggest telecommunications mergers in history

Cut a deal with Republicans for a puny payroll tax cut that virtually ensures reductions in Social Security and threatens the future of the program.

Abandoned working people of Main Street by endorsing illegal foreclosures by Wall Street banks.

Would you vote for such a man for president even if his name was Barack Obama?

You do have an option.  If you are a liberal such as I am and believe you have already wasted a vote by casting your ballot for Obama, you can abstain.  When you are in the voting booth, do not vote for any candidate who does not represent what you believe in, what you stand for.  Leave the presidential field blank.  Abstain.  To do otherwise is to endorse all of the foregoing.

*The title of this post is taken from a book by Roger D. Hodge entitled The Mendacity of Hope:  Barack Obama and the Betrayal of American Liberalism.  The book is an excellent read and sheds light on the depth of the treachery foisted on the middle class by the current president.

The post itself is original and comprised wholly of my own words and opinions.

Adding to the Wreckage

Yes, even some so-called liberal Democrats add to the pile of debris that DC politics has become.

Kay Hagan (D-NC) along with John Kerry (D-MA) joined with Republicans to further rig the marketplace in favor of Big Pharma. These two pseudo-Dems have forsaken the people who supported them in exchange for an inside track in the payoff money race.

There is no honor among politicians. But the same applies to corporations. If these two Blue Dogs step out of line just once, they lose the race for the boodle.

So they have ensnared themselves in the Big Pharma web from which there is no escape.

There is an old Mafia expression: To win in politics, you gotta have the geetus. These two corpo-Dems know where to go to find it.

Barack Obama: Aristocrat in Chief

If true Democrats don’t already know that Obama is a Blue Dog pseudo-Democrat in the mold of Big Daddy Bill Clinton, they haven’t been paying attention.

Here is a list of pretend accomplishments that Obama and his tinhorn Machiavellis have shoved down the throats of former supporters.

After HR legislation health insurance is still badly in need of reform. Obamacare is a bit of foolishness intended as a sop for voters and windfall for health insurance companies. It is similar in outline to the Bush prescription drug plan, also intended to increase the wealth of special interests at taxpayer expense.

Financial regulation missed the mark entirely and can better be described as financial manipulation rather than reform The improvements the bill made are intended mainly as a pretense of reform whose purpose is nothing more than to pull the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting voters again much the same as Bush’s prescription drug plan. Both are a shadow of what might have been

The massive bank bailout was engineered from the White House to lend a taxpayer funded helping hand to friends of Obama and to protect the Wall Street payoff money pipeline to the Democratic Party. What is little known is that Obama and his Machiavellis strong armed any Democrats who opposed the legislation even to the point of threatening to support Republicans in elections against loyal Democrats.

The White House also displayed strong leadership by manipulating Dem support for other bogus reform legislative projects.

Obama agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts thereby further imperiling the security of the nation and by so doing made the cuts for the wealthy permanent.

His failure to help the middle class by refusing to pursue adequate stimulus and the mean-spirited rejection of help during the foreclosure debacle showcases Obama’s aristocratic approach to governing.

Moreover, Obama has continued and expanded the Bush wars and is now complicit in Constitutional violations such as imprisonment without legal representation or trial ; spying on Americans; political assassination; Guantanamo and more.

The Korea trade pact, like all of the other rigged trade agreements, simply pours salt on the wounds.

And after all of these daggers pointed directly at the throats of taxpayers the worst is about to befall his betrayed supporters.

By accepting a measly FICA tax cut in his Faustian bargain with Republicans – a bargain in which he sold the souls of his supporters – he has increased the Social Security short fall and advanced by years the once far off date when the fund will need a tax increase. And he may very well have agreed to include his pet project in the faked deal: cuts to Social Security, an outcome he all but mandated by his duplicity. Moreover, his intrigues could very well have opened the floodgates to radical changes to Social Security in the future.

His promise to defend Net Neutrality has morphed into yet another example of mealy mouthed backstabbing.

Is Obama a strong president? He is indeed. He represents with wile and cunning the wealthiest ten percent of the nation and has backhanded the rest of us. He is truly the Aristocrat in Chief.

What is the purpose in all of his deceit? Obama is a member of the club. He, like so many other elected officials in Washington, is using his office as a stepping stone to immense wealth – wealth even greater than he now possesses. When he leaves office in a scant two years a grateful aristocracy will reward him. He will amass riches beyond his wildest dreams.

And, of course, the laughs on us.

Fox News’ Black Hole

Andy Borowitz comments on the black hole Fox News would become if it had to limit angry rhetoric.

Fox host Glenn Beck took the news of a possible programming change in stride: “If I’m kicked off the air, I’ll return to my first love: standing in the back of crowded theaters and yelling, ‘Fire.’”

In other cable news developments, CNN confirmed that it was considering dropping Kathleen Parker from its “Parker Spitzer” program, but said it had balked at Elliot Spitzer’s suggestion of “a different woman every night.”

You gotta read Andy Borowitz.  He’s hit Washington DC with some of the funniest jokes since Barack Obama appointed Bill Daley chief of staff.  Oh, sorry, that’s not a joke.

Converting Gays to Straights in the Army

Joe Rehyansky: Allow Lesbians To Serve In Order To Give ‘Straight Male GIs A Fair Shot At Converting’ Them

If we gave straight female soldiers a fair shot at converting males, half the military would claim to be gay.

Could lead to a new form of post traumatic stress syndrome for the ladies in uniform:  “Been trying to convert this guy for three months.  I’m worn out and he still claims he’s gay.”

Brings to mind a whole new take on Mae West’s old line:  Why don’t you come up and let me convert you sometime.  And I’m not talkin’ about religion, big boy.

If it catches on that straight soldiers should make every effort to convert lesbians things could get out of hand.

What if the gay ladies begin to complain about advances by straight soldiers?  In that case here is a soldier’s manifesto:

  1. I studied it in basic training.
  2. My sergeant said it was OK.
  3. Hey, I was just doing my duty.
  4. It’s in the Army Training Manual; Homosexual Conversion Techniques; Chapter One, Page One
  5. Sorry, but I didn’t know she was straight.
  6. Nobody told me lesbians could get pregnant.
  7. If I volunteer to go to Iraq will I get 72 lesbians.
  8. Some of my best friends are, ya know, lesbians.

Not anymore soldier.

Not sure what the intent of this painting is but it is was painted in 1594, is suggestive and the artist seems to have preferred to remain anonymous.

The Blind Leading the Blind

Barack Obama take note.  For the first two years of your administration you lost your way.  You however are at fault for the sorriest choice of advisors of any Democratic president in modern history.  And, lo and behold, you have just compounded the error with your most recent selections.  Oh, and thanks but no thanks for thumbing your nose once again at your base.

Andromeda by Rembrandt and Vasari

It’s amazing how contemporary history and economics intertwine with ancient mythology.  Substitute Andromeda for the middle class, constrained as it is by the collusion of government and corporations, and we can see a modern parallel.

In Greek mythology Andromeda, whose mother was Cassiopeia, was chained to the rock to be sacrificed to a sea monster as punishment for her  mother’s bragging.    This story has a happy ending however.  Andromeda was rescued by Perseus.  They married, had eight children and presumably lived happily ever after.

The fate of the middle class in America is an unfinished story whose outcome is still in doubt.  In all likelihood, if present trends continue, the tale will not have a happy ending.

The paintings below are by Renaissance masters.  Give Rembrandt credit for modesty.  Or perhaps he was just sexually repressed.  Not so the hot blooded Italian.

Proud to be a Liberal.

John F. Kennedy on what it means to be a liberal.

But if by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”

City Announces New Emergency Plan

According to an anonymous source, the office of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has just authorized the purchase of twenty thousand snow shovels. The shovels will be handed out to policemen, firemen and EMS personnel and will be used to facilitate emergency responses during snowstorms. All responders will be required to carry the snow shovels on their persons at all times from the beginning of the winter solstice to the arrival of the vernal equinox.

During snow emergencies responders will be mustered and made to clear paths to and from police stations, fire houses and hospitals to all communities within the five boroughs.

Labor union leaders announced that they would present the first shovel to hizzoner in a ceremony to be held at Gracie Mansion as soon as the streets have been cleared. No date was set for the festivities.

Ladies, Please!

Can’t a guy get any privacy around here?

Nothing shy about these young maidens though.  And the guys don’t seem to be particularly disturbed, if you get my drift.

A scene such as this might have occurred thousands of years ago when nakedness apparently engendered no shame.  But beyond that, the young ladies seem quite bold!

Notice in the background the matrons are indifferent; or perhaps just unimpressed.

As always, click the image for a larger view.

A Thousand Words

Is a picture worth a thousand words?  This one says it all.  The themes would work well with the White House as well.
