Sen. Jim DeMint, the Republican extremist from South Carolina, stated recently that he would not back Mitt Romney for president again unless the former liberal GOP governor of Massachusetts rejects the health insurance plan adopted in that state during the latter’s tenure as chief executive. The plan is referred to as RomneyCare and is unpopular among Republicans as well as many residents of the state where the first shots of the American revolution were fired and heard round the world (the remarks of Michelle Bachmann to the contrary).

Jim DeMint is one popular guy in South Carolina. The red counties went head over heels for him in the last senatorial election.  It’s safe to say the senator has a safe seat, wouldn’t you say.

Big smile for the folks back home, Jimbo. Say cheese.

Sen. DeMint was a supporter of the flip floping liberal Romney in the 2008 election and at that time praised RomneyCare going so far as to say a similar plan should be adopted for the entire country.

Well, as you might have expected, Sen. DeMint has himself flip flopped. He now believes RomneyCare is a perfectly dreadful idea.

DeMint’s support for Romney, rest assured, had little to do with Romney’s former liberal positions or his about face and abrupt turn to the right. The senator from South Carolina was scheming for a vice presidential appointment should Romney win the nomination. Alas, both politicos became fast and famous also rans.

You many recall, John McCain’s fortunes underwent a dramatic reversal and the senator from Arizona won the GOP nomination, crushing the ambitions of both Romney and DeMint.

But never despair for the estimable senator from the Palmetto State. For the Nobella Pizza Prize Committe has just announced from its hideout in Pasta Fagioli, Italy that DeMint is the winner of the Schmuckup Prize in Honesty. The senator was awarded the prize for his abrupt voltafaccia on RomneyCare and for expressing his true feelings on the regrettable health insurance plan of the state where the great revolutionary cities of Concord and Lexington are located.  (Michelle Bachmann are you there, come in Michelle). DeMint’s about face reveals the true nature of his right wing radical ideas and also the belated realization that he would never be selected as a vice presidential candidate by Romney.

The Committee sends its warm congratulations to the confused senator who was hoping desperately that no one would notice his ultimatum to the former governor to renounce RomneyCare.

Winners of The Schmuckup Prize receive a certificate acknowledging the award as well as a forged autographed copy of a photo of Don Alberto Vito Nobella, the originator of the prize. In addition, winners are given the coveted statuette called The Little Schmucky engraved with the words “Schmucked up beyond all reason.” The Little Schmucky is sculpted of rusted metal stolen from an auto junk yard. All prizes are awarded while supplies last and unfortunately for the current winner supplies just ran out.
